Chandigarh,
1st April, 2016: The Governor of Punjab,
Haryana and Administrator of U.T, Chandigarh, His Excellency Sh. Kaptan Singh
Solanki today inaugurated the 53rd National
Maritime Day (NMD) at Haryana Raj Bhavan, U.T, Chandigarh.
The inauguration ceremony
was held at the Haryana Raj Bhavan, in which the’ Chairman National Maritime
Day Celebrations Committee Chandigarh’ (an initiative of ‘Company of Master
Mariners of India Chandigarh Chapter’), Capt MS Kahlon and Chairman FOSMA Mumbai,
an association Capt Navin Passey, pinned the wearing apparel of the
Administrator UT Chandigarh with the National Maritime Day Pin in the presence
of other NMD Committee members.
National Maritime day is
celebrated on 5th April
every year all over India, to commemorate the Sailing of First Indian Flag
Vessel ‘’S.S. Loyalty” in 1919 from Mumbai to England, prior to which,
all trade to and from India was carried on British and other non-Indian
flag ships.
This objective of holding
these National celebrations is to recognize the importance of Merchant Shipping
for our country. The Merchant Navy ships used to carry more than 75% of
Indian trading goods, and have also formed a second line of defense that can be
made available to support the Indian Navy during the time of any hostilities.
Chandigarh and its
environs are home to a large number of seafarers who participate in these
celebrations though Blood Donation camp, Professional Seminar, remembering
those who have lost their lives at sea and Gala get together with the seafarers
and their families.
These celebrations are
the initiative of ‘Company of Master Mariners of India which is a profession al
body of serving future and ex Captains of Merchant Navy Ships with its HO in
Mumbai. The Chandigarh Chapter established in 2011 is coordinating these
activities through ‘National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee Chandigarh’.
