Chandigarh, 24th April 2016: Department of Health and Family Welfare is going to introduce IPV
(inactivated polio virus) vaccine in immunization schedule in U.T. Chandigarh
from 25th April 2016.
As one
of its four major objectives, the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018 calls on countries to introduce
at least 1 dose of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) into routine
immunization schedules, strengthen routine
immunization and withdraw oral polio vaccine (OPV) in a phased
manner.
According to Dr Vanita Gupta, Director Health
Services,Chandigarh has
achievedgood Immunization coverage through Universal Immunization Programme*.
Immunization is the most cost effective public health intervention that has
delivered excellent results in vaccine preventable childhood diseases.IPV is
one of the three vaccines that were approved by the government for inclusion in
the UIP*.According to District Immunization officer Dr. Anu Chopra Dosajh ,one
injection of IPV will be given to children who are 14 weeks of age .This
vaccine will be given to these children along with injection pentavalent
vaccine and oral polio drops. From now onwards the trivalent polio vaccine that
was currently administered is being replaced by the bivalent variety to reduce
incidence of vaccine-derived polio virus.
Oral polio vaccine is made of live
attenuated polio virus of all three strains of polio – P1, P2 and P3. IPV provides serum immunity to all three types of poliovirus,
resulting in protection against paralytic poliomyelitis. Two drops of the oral vaccine, which contains a weakened polio
virus, is the preferred tool in eradication efforts because it is cheap and
gives resistance in the digestive tract to lower the transmission of
virus. On the other hand the injectable polio vaccine works
largely in the bloodstream.Using both types of polio vaccines would speed up the
efforts to free the world of this disease
