Chandigarh, 22nd April, 2016: A Conference on "Environmental Education
through Eco Clubs - let us think globally and act locally" on the occasion of ‘World Earth Day was inaugurated today by Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS,
Adviser to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh at Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary
School, Sector 27-A, Chandigarh. The conference was organized by Department of Environment & Forests in
collaboration with Youth Innovative Society (an Environmental NGO), to
promote Eco Club activities for educating and spreading awareness amongst the
students on environment.
On
this occasion, the “Greening Chandigarh
Action Plan 2016-17” was released by the Chief Guest. This Annual Greening
Chandigarh Action Plan is a guiding tool for all the greening agencies of
Chandigarh Administration to strategies effectively to fulfill their commitment
of making City Beautiful more clean & green. Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS, also
launched the Website on ‘Digitization of Forest Flora of Chandigarh’ for the
general public.
The
‘Best Eco-Club Award of UT Chandigarh’
for 2015 was also distributed by the Chief Guest, for commendable work done in

Administrator, UT Chandigarh, called upon all stockholders to plant more
& more trees and make this ‘Greening Chandigarh Acton Plan 2016-17’ a grand
success. He also congratulated ‘Best Eco Club Awardees’. He exhorted that we
all should strive for making this city a Carbon neutral city on view of Global
warming.
In
his welcome address, Sh. Santosh Kumar, IFS, CCF informed that against the
target of 2, 05,000 saplings in 2015-16, altogether 2, 48,338 saplings were
planted and this year 2016-17, a target of 2,20,000 saplings have been fixed.
He
further informed that through the website www.chandigarhforestflora.in,
any general person can identify a tree
with the help of its 2-3 features like shape of leaves, color of flowers etc.
besides, it lists out all major tree species found in Chandigarh along with its
full taxonomy and other details.
Among
other prominent personalities attending the function were Sh. Santosh Kumar,
IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest & Director Environment, Sh. Birendra
Choudhary, IFS, DCF(WL) and Ms. Arpana, IFS, DCF(BG&NR) , Sh. PJS Dadhwal,
Additional Director ( Env) and other senior officers of the Administration, Sh.
Sachin Sharma, Chairman, Youth Innovative Society. The function was attended by
various Eco Club Incharges, School Principals & Teachers of Schools of
Chandigarh.
