Fishes Released in Sukhna Lake

Chandigarh, 26th July, 2016:   Sukhna lake Chandigarh is the main habitat of aquatic life. It is also the source of attraction of migratory birds coming on the onset of winters from far off countries that enjoy the fish fingerlings as their feed.  The protection of aquatic life to maintain ecological balance of the Lake is the top priority of the Fisheries Department, U.T Chandigarh

A Govt Fish Seed Farm established down below the regulator on the extreme end of the Lake is producing quality fish seed for keeping its stock in Sukhna Lake for the breeding of the fishes in the Lake.

In an event organized on 26th July 2016, the officials of the Fisheries department released indigenous varieties of fishes i.e. Mrigal, Rohu and Catla . Dr Adapa Karthik, IAS, Secretary Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, U.T. Chandigarh graced the occasion with his presence.

The fishes were released with due consultation with Dr M.S Johal, a Fishery Expert, & Prof. Y.K Rawal, Zoology Department, Punjab University,   Chandigarh.  The fisheries experts advised that other carp varieties of fishes are already in abundance in Sukhna Lake, the department should go for release of indigenous varieties like mrigal, rohu and catla this time as these breeds are known to control weed growth in the natural Lakes like Sukhna very effectively.

Capt Karnail Singh PCS, Director Animal Husbandry & Fisheries U.T. Chandigarh stated that the   stocking of fish seed in the Sukhna Lake has become necessary during this year because   the   big and old fishes were weeded out through a private contract awarded from 19-10-15 to 21-10-15 last year. So for the purpose of maintaining balance in aquatic life and to make provision of feed for the migratory birds before their arrival on the onset of winters the fish seed of the indigenous varieties has been released.
