MP Kirron Kher inaugurates the Three-Day National Sports Meet for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

Chandigarh, September 19, 2016: The opening ceremony of 1st National Sports Meet for Individuals with Intellectual Disability from 19th to 21st September 2016 under the aegis of National Cricket Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities organized by the GRIID was held in Cricket Stadium -16. The Chief Guest of the Ceremony was Smt. Kirron Kher, M.P. Chandigarh and the Guest of Honor Prof. Arun Grover, Vice Chancellor, PU, Chandigarh. Sh. Anurag Agarwal, IAS, Home Secretary-cum- Secretary Medical Education & Research, UT, Chandigarh also graced the occasion with his presence.  The Sports meet is being organized for providing an opportunity to special children to showcase their talents in different sports. There is no platform where these children can participate at National Level.

            National Sports Meet 2016 is a three days programme wherein more than 500 Individuals with Intellectual Disability from 22 different institutions and representing 07 states of India have taken part in the followong Sports: Cricket, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basket Ball and Skating. The matches will be played in Panjab University Ground, PU Gymnagium Hall, PGI Ground, Sports Ground Sector-46, 32, 10 and at different venues depending on the games.

Teams from Chandigarh and seven different states are participating the sports meet including, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Those participating in the sports meet are between the age groups of 14 and 35.

On this occasion a floral welcome was given by the special children of GRIID to the dignitaries.  They presented bouquets to the guests. Dr. Atul Sachdeva, Director GRIID, welcomed the dignitaries. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mrs. Vani Ratnam, officer Incharge, GRIID.
