SPCA-Celebrates World Rabies Day

Chandigarh, 30th September, 2016: Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease which kills more than 50,000 people every year and remains a major concern worldwide. It is believed that more than 95% of rabies is spread by dogs.  Started in 2007, 28th September is celebrated as “World Rabies Day” every year with an aim to raise awareness about this deadly disease among human being.
It is estimated that the exuberant cost of post exposure vaccination received by humans every year is only treating the disease but not addressing the cause. Thus far more cost effective way is to tackle the disease is at source i.e. by vaccinating the dogs.

As a continuing effort to fight Rabies, SPCA-Chandigarh under the able guidance of Sh. Ajit Balaji Joshi, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, U.T., Chandigarh-cum-President, SPCA, Chandigarh organized a free anti rabies vaccination camp for the free roaming and community dogs in village Burail, Sector 45, Chandigarh.  The camp was attended by Dr. Kanwarjit Singh, Joint Director (AH)-Chandigarh-cum-HGS, SPCA, Dr. R. S. Bajwa, Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Sh. Bharat Bhushan Kapilla, President Market Association, Burail, Chandigarh.  The Staff of SPCA captured and vaccinated a total of 53 dogs against rabies.  The general public present at the camp was educated about various ways to prevent the spread of disease like routine and timely preventive vaccination of their pet and other dogs, reporting every case of human and animal dog bites to doctors and adopting responsible ownership of stray-dog.  Carrying forward this campaign to defeat Rabies, SPCA-Chandigarh has decided to organize more such camps in other parts of the city in time to come.
