Chandigarh, 30th January, 2017: SHS-NLEP celebrated "Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign" to commemorate 30th January 2017 as Anti-Leprosy Day. The purpose of this campaign was to create awareness in the community about Leprosy. The public was sensitized about the signs and symptoms of the disease, complications associated with delay in treatment and free treatment available at all the Govt. Hospitals.
They were also urged not to discriminate against any person suffering from Leprosy. The Campaign was carried out in 25 areas of Chandigarh by reading out the message of Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator U.T., Chadigarh and an appeal by the Sarpanch. A pledge was also taken to take care of any person with leprosy and treat them with love and care. In the Campaign, held in the Urban PHC of Mauli Jagran, the Director Health Services – Dr. Rakesh Kashyap, Deputy Mayor – Shri. Anil Kumar Dube, Pradhan and panchayat members were also present. The programme started by observing 2 minutes silence as a mark of respect on Mahatama Gandhi's Martyrdom day.
In the program, Director Health Services, U.T., Chandigarh read out the message of Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator U.T., Chandigarh. The Deputy Mayor read out the appeal and pledge was taken by all who were present during the function.
Also, other awareness activities will be carried out in the whole of Chandigarh during the fortnight from 30thJanuary 2017 to 13th February 2017. During this fortnight, lectures on leprosy awareness will be delivered in the schools of rural areas and colonies. Banners and Posters on leprosy will be displayed at all the Govt. Dispensaries Private Clinics and public places of Chandigarh. Handbills will also be distributed to the public.
