03rd February, 2017: State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh in
association with Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights today organized
a ‘Capacity Building Workshop’ for launching of ‘Child Friendly Chandigarh’
Campaign at Chandigarh Judicial Academy, Sector-43, Chandigarh. The workshop
was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge, High Court of Punjab
and Haryana Chandigarh and Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority,
U.T. Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. Anurag Agarwal, IAS, Home Secretary,
Chandigarh Administration who was the Guest of Honour.
In his address,
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant stated that children are amongst the most
vulnerable sections in any society representing one third of the world
population and it’s our responsibility to provide proper opportunities to them
for making them grow into responsible citizens of tomorrow. Sh.
Anurag Agarwal, IAS, Home Secretary, Chandigarh highlighted the importance of
involvement of children in decision making where their rights are involved.
Welcome address on this occasion was delivered by Sh. Mahavir Singh, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh. Prof. Devi Sirohi, Chairperson, Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights told the gathering about the various provisions of Right to Education Act and grey areas involved. Sh. Rubinderjit Singh Brar, PCS, DPI (School) talked about the quality of education in Chandigarh schools. Prof. Nishtha Jaiswal, Member, Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights deliberated upon the provisions relating to corporal punishment. Dr. Upneet Lalli, Deputy Director, Institute of Correctional Administration, Chandigarh interacted on the topic “Children in substance abuse” and stated that there is need for care, concern and connect with the children.
The entire proceedings of the Workshop were summarized by Sh. Amarinder Sharma, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh in his concluding remarks and vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Neil Roberts, Chairman, Child Welfare Committee. The workshop was attended by the Principals, Vice Principals and Coordinators of more than 150 schools of Chandigarh. A logo of Child Friendly Chandigarh city was also released on this occasion by the Hon’ble Chief Guest and Guest of Honour, which was designed by famous artist and cartoonist Mr. Sandeep Joshi of the Tribune Group signifying the hope that the voices of children are heard freely and they are treated as equal participants in development and growth of the city beautiful.
