Governor Inaugurates 450 kWp Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant at GMCH 32


20th December, 2017:  Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh inaugurated the 450 kWp Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant at two wheeler parking area of Govt. Medical College & Hospital, Sec.32, today in the presence of Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS, Advisor to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh. Sh. Anurag Agarwal, IAS, Home Secretary-cum- Secretary (Science & Tech &RE), Sh. Santosh Kumar, IFS, Director (Science & Tech & RE) & Chief Executive Officer, CREST, Chandigarh, and Prof. A.K. Janmeja, Director Principal, GMCH-32 and other officers of Chandigarh Administration were also present on the occasion.
Sh. Santosh Kumar, IFS, Director (Science & Tech & RE) & CEO (CREST), UT, Chandigarh said that this 450 kWp Rooftop SPV Power Plant has been installed by CREST (Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science & Technology Promotion Society) with 30% CFA from Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Govt. of India through M/s KEC International Ltd., Gurgaon. The total cost of this Project is Rs.2.74 crores which include operation & maintenance charge for 10 years.   
This Plant is able to generate 5,40,000 kWh of Solar Energy per year, which is equivalent to reduction of 372 metric ton of CO2 and in turn equivalent to planting of 40,386  trees per year, and hence a remarkable initiative under Climate Change Action Plan.
It was further informed that this Two Wheeler Parking in the Block-M of GMCH-32 is open parking of about 27,000 sq. ft. area where two wheelers are getting parked in the open causing degradation of vehicles in summer.  With installation of this solar power plant, the parking has become shaded parking with no damage to vehicles being parked.
The Adviser to the Administrator emphasized that we should not leave any stone unturned for achieving this target of 50 MW Solar by 2022. He informed that with the installation of this 450 kWp plant, the total achievement for Chandigarh has reached to 16.05 MW.

On this occasion, the “State of Environment Report-2016” was also released by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh at GMCH-32. This State of Environment Report-2016 is a prominent step towards educating the people about the major environmental aspects of Chandigarh and to provide the knowledge banks with the latest facts & figures of the city related to six important environmental issues like Forest and Tree Cover, Air Quality, Water, Energy, Waste Management & Sanitation and Transportation of the city.  It was anticipated that through this Report, the State Governments and UT Administrations would be able to integrate environmental dimensions in their social, economic and sustainable development planning.
