Chandigarh, 25th January, 2018: The Election Department, U.T., Chandigarh
today celebrated the State Level function on National Voters’ Day at Post
Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-42, Chandigarh. All the Asstt.
Electoral Registration Officer’s also celebrated the 8th National
Voters’ Day at their respective areas in Chandigarh. Celebrations were also
done at all the polling stations in Union Territory, Chandigarh.
Shri. Ajoy Kumar Sinha, IAS, Finance Secretary-cum-Chief Electoral Officer was
the Chief Guest of the function. Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Joint
Chief Electoral Officer and Electoral Officers of Chandigarh Parliamentary
Constituency were also present at the State Level National Voters’ Day
function. During the function, students of Govt. College of Girls performed the
cultural programme. Public and officers took the Pledge for the faith in
Democracy and to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced
by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement.
Chief Electoral Officer stated that for all the eligible voters, who have
attained the age of 18 years as on 1st January, 2018, a
campaign was carried out from 1st October to 30th
October, 2017 and thereafter a special drive was carried out by the BLO’s which
was extended up to 15th December,2017 to identify the eligible
voters. Best efforts have been made by the Election Department to enroll
all eligible electors who have attained the age of 18 years. At present
Chandigarh Parliamentary Constituency have 5, 85,630 electors which was finally
published on 10-01-2018.
The Chief Guest facilitated the young and millennium electors by distributing
the newly prepared Electors Photo Identity Cards, also awarded the winner of
the Election Quiz and congratulated all citizens, especially the newly enrolled
voters, on this historic occasion of the 8th National Voters’
Day.
Sh. Saurabh Mishra, IAS, Jt.CEO also highlighted the importance of a single
vote in his speech and thanked the Chief Guest and all participants on National
Voters’ Day.
As directed
by the ECI, the Electoral Literacy Clubs will be formulated in all Educational
Institutes, Polling Stations and other organization to create awareness among residents.
Young electors and future electors were educated about the electoral process
and to establish electoral literacy culture throughout the India, so that the
person when eligible can enroll and exercise his/her vote. The National Voter’s
Day is dedicated to the Constitutional Rights bestowed on every citizen of
India by the founder fathers of the Nation, who granted the right of adult
suffrage to every Indian citizen, irrespective of religion, race, caste,
community, language, region or socio-economic considerations.
