Chandigarh, 13th March 2018: Sometimes the smallest of things that are right there in front of us are also the most important. Chandigarh urban festival is a small big step that brings to the centre stage that one small thing which can have a direct impact on the livability of our city by improving it manifolds, organized by ACT! Chandigarh. ACT! Chandigarh is a registered society of practicing architects and citizens working towards a sustainable urban future for the Tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.
To survive, people have to learn to rely on each other and get involved in their immediate neighborhood without giving up too much of their privacy or personal security. For example-Holding a get together, participate in cultural activities, beautify your neighborhood etc.
CUF-18 (Chandigarh Urban Festival - our city our celebration) is a festival for Chandigarh, a mega event intended to connect all citizens in a very beautiful concept. This is entirely a non commercial and a non entertainment event. To celebrate your own belongingness and your own happiness! All activities of the festival will culminate on 25th March, 2018 with a curated event full of displays and performances in certain urban spaces of the city, where citizen would be able to revel in a vibrant and enriching environment, thereby giving everyone an experience they would want to repeat and recreate. The group will also be conducting an open hand march that will be flagged off by H.E The administrator UT, Sh. V.P Singh Badnore himself. This would be a first of its kind carnival that will move from the Matka Chowk to the Open Hand Monument and would involve multiple bands and performances by local colleges and citizen groups etc. and would promote pride for our city. The event would conclude at the Open Hand with a cultural performance celebrating the diversity of Chandigarh and citizens releasing sky lanterns in the night sky creating a movement of everlasting beauty
Resolving urban issues, and working at sustainable development goals for city forms the academic aspect of the event. This intends to generate a think tank of future development goals for this important urban centre that can contribute towards a sustainable future. The phase –I conference, to be held in conjunction with the festival, will focus at the ground realities and factors that are at play in Chandigarh today and involve multiple stakeholder discussions on issues and ideas. The phase –II conference in October will involve international participation and focus on the larger issue of Chandigarh’s legacy and history as a framework to think about its future, through a series of thematic papers, tie panel discussions and workshops.
A movement like this can become successful only if it is self driven. All of us together can take it forward by taking ownership of the city and celebrate with the city like we celebrate any other festival at home.
