Chandigarh, 1st June, 2018: The National Nutrition Mission also known as POSHAN Abhiyaan was approved by Govt. of India in order to address the issue of Malnutrition. POSHAN Abhiyaan was launched on 8th March 2018 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in Distt. Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. The Abhiyaan aims to reduce stunting (2%), under-nutrition (2%), anaemia (3%) (Among young children, women and adolescent girls) and reduce low birth weight (2%) per annum. The target of the mission is to bring down stunting among children in the age group 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.
In this Context a Regional workshop on POSHAN Abhiyaan and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandna Yojana (PMMVY) involving the States of Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory, Chandigarh was organised at Dr. Gopi Chand Bhargava Auditorium, PGIMER, Chandigarh on 1 June, 2018. Worthy Secretary/Joint Secretary/ Principal Secretaries/ Directors and the representatives from the States of Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh attended the workshop which was held in five different sessions and had eminent speakers from various fields.

Development Govt of India outlined the details of the POSHAN Abhiyaan and PMMVY. Dr. Rajesh Kumar Joint Secretary, MWCD, GOI and Col. Sameer Kanwar (Retd.), Consultant POSHAN Abhiyaan deliberated upon the Objectives, Components and Targets of POSHAN Abhiyaan. Regarding the implementation of the Abhiyaan, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Joint Secretary, MWCD, GOI enumerated the key nutrition strategies and interventions to address the issue of Malnutrition such as IYCF (Infant Young child Feeding ), Food and Nutrition, Immunisation, Institutional Deliveries, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene ), De-worming, ORS- Zinc, Food Fortification, Dietary diversification, Adolescent Nutrition, Maternal Health and Nutrition, ECD (Early Childhood Development )/ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education ), ICT-RTM (Information and Communication Technology enabled Real Time Monitoring ). He emphasised the importance of convergence between various departments. He further stressed upon the need of converting this mission into a Jan Andolan and to ensure that Nutrition should be the subject of discussion of each and every household. He further stressed that Anganwadi Centres should be the hub of every activity where information regarding health practices and dietary diversification should be imparted to the community. He hoped that the POSHAN Diwas should be the message of understanding Nutrition and monitoring the growth of child from conception through childhood of every family. This would ensure a healthy generation and healthy society.
Other Consultants from the MWCD discussed in detail the key components of POSHAN Abhiyaan and PMMVY which included ICDS-CAS (Common Application Software ), Behaviour Change Communication strategies, Incremental Learning Approach Sh.V.C.Choudhary, Under secretary, MWCD and Mr. Sumanatra, CDFI and their team deliberated upon Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandna Yojna (PMMVY) where a cash incentive of Rs.5000/- would be deposited directly into the bank account of Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM) for the first living child of the family subject to their fulfilling of specific conditions relating to Maternal and Child Health. The team further stressed that PMMVY is being implemented through a Centrally deployed Web Based MIS Software Application and the focal point of implementation would be the Anganwadi centre (AWC) and ASHA, ANM .
