Chandigarh, 13th September 2018: Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Hon’ble Governor of
Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, interacted with the staff and
representatives of Parents’ Association to strengthen and upgrade the
facilities for children with disabilities at Government Rehabilitation
Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Chandigarh today.
Advisor to Administrator Sh. Parimal Rai, Home Secretary Sh.
Arun Kumar Gupta, Finance Secretary Sh. A.K. Sinha, Director GRIID, Dr B. S.
Chavan, Sh. Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer, Sh. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect,
Chandigarh Administration and other representatives from various Departments of
Chandigarh were also present in the meeting.
The Administrator has desired that Chandigarh Administration
should be sensitive towards need of disabled friendly and directed all the
departments to make Chandigarh the first disable friendly city in the country.
He has also desired to see Chandigarh among the top 10 cities in the world.
It has been decided in the meeting that hostel facility shall be
made for male and female special children, especially for female trainees who
come from neighbouring states to provide them safe and affordable
accommodation. Sh. Parimal Rai, Adviser to the Administrator also emphasized in
bringing world class facility for disable persons in Chandigarh.
Another important suggestion was given by the Administrator to
make changes in all the outsourced contracts in UT Chandigarh to make a
mandatory provision of 1% reservation for children with intellectual
disability, cerebral palsy, autism and multiple disabilities. In another major
move, the Administrator has decided to arrange additional Rs.3.00 crores for
the screening of all pregnant ladies and children so that the number of
disabilities is brought down in Chandigarh.
Keeping in mind the provisions of children with special needs
who have lost their parents, the Administrator has also proposed a suitable
building wherein a special scheme ‘Gharaunda’ of National Trust can be
implemented for at least 30 families.
Various other segments were given importance to improve the
infrastructure at GRIID like provision for lift for wheelchair bound children
so that they can easily move around, a multipurpose hall GRIID which shall be
disabled friendly. A playground for these children will also be completed by
next month. Apart from this, housing options for the economically weaker
sections at GRIID will be explored in Maloya.
