Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis holds meeting with officials of Chandigarh Administration

Chandigarh, 5th September 2018: Sh. Hansraj Hans, Hon’ble Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, New Delhi visited Chandigarh today to study the socio-economic, living, working, service and educational conditions of Scavengers/Safai Karamcharis residing in UT, Chandigarh.  The Vice-Chairman held a meeting with Senior Officers of Chandigarh Administration and representatives of the Safai Karamcharis working in Municipal Corporation and other departments at UT Guest House, Chandigarh to discuss their issues/demands.
The Director Social Welfare welcomed Hon’ble Vice-Chairman on behalf of the Chandigarh Administration and briefed the schemes and issues relating to the Safai Karamcharis.  Hon’ble Vice-Chairman also apprised that Chandigarh is a well planned city and is equipped with modern infrastructure having effective drainage/ sewerage system. The practice of manual scavenging is not prevalent in the UT of Chandigarh. It was also informed that the department has implemented the Manual Scavenger Act, 2013 in UT, Chandigarh and issued all necessary notifications under the Act.  
It was also informed that Chandigarh Scheduled Castes Corporation disburses loans and provides skill development trainings under different trades to the children of the safai karamcharis.  During the current financial year, skill development trainings have also been provided to 867 beneficiaries in different trades.  Besides these, a scheme namely “Cash Award for the Children of Safai Karamcharis” is also being implemented by the Corporation in which Rs.30,000/- is being given to the eligible students on the basis of their performance of 10th and 12th classes.   In addition to the above exclusive schemes for safai karamcharis, they are also getting benefit under the schemes meant for scheduled castes.
Hon’ble Vice-Chairman gave directions to the concerned officers to give immediate compensation of Rs.10.00 Lakh to the dependent family members of safai karamcharis who died in sewerage work (manholes, septic tanks) and also to provide safety kits to the Safaikaramchari/sewermen.  Hon’ble vice-Chairman also stressed upon the health of safaikaramcharis and given directions to ensure their regular medical health checkups.
 He further directed the department concerned to ensure statutory benefits to all the safai karamcharis viz. PF/ESI/Leave and to abolish the contractual system for the welfare of the safai karamchari.  In the end, Vice-Chairman directed all the HODs/officers of the departments to have a sensitive approach towards the grievances of all the safai karamcharis who come from economically weaker sections of the society.
The Finance Secretary ensured that the officers of the Chandigarh Administration would consider the demands of the safai karamcharis and will take necessary action in pursuance of the decision taken in today’s meeting.

Pulse Polio Campaign

Chandigarh, 4 th   April, 2017:   Activities conducted for three days i.e. from 2nd – 4th April, 2017 during Pulse Polio Campaign ‘Do Boond Zindgi Ki’ to win the war of eradicating Polio from the society and to immunize the children in the age group of 0-5 Years with Oral Polio Drops were successfully completed today. E auction of various commercial, residential and industrial sites to begin in Chandigarh

7th January 2019: Chandigarh Administration is about to begin the e auction process of various commercial, residential and industrial sites in Chandigarh. 10 residential sites on freehold basis,13 commercial sites on leasehold basis and 1 industrial site on leasehold basis are proposed to be e auctioned. The auction will be made public on 9th January 2019 at 9:00 AM and the documents can be submitted/EMD can be paid from 9th january till 23rd January 2019. Document/EMD approvals will be given from 24th January till 30th January. In addition to this the Estate Department will create a help desk at Estate Office Chandigarh on the above dates to create digital signatures of the applicants.
