City Beautiful celebrates 70th Republic Day with pride and patriotism


Chandigarh, 26 January, 2019: The patriotic fervour warmed up the cold winter morning in Chandigarh today as officers & officials of Chandigarh Administration, citizens of Chandigarh, teachers and children of the school enthusiastically gathered at Parade Ground, sector-17, Chandigarh to celebrate Republic Day 2019. Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, U.T Chandigarh was the chief guest of the occasion. The Adviser to the Administrator first laid a wreath at the War Memorial at Bougainvillea Garden, in memory of all members of the armed forces who gave up their life for the country. From there, Sh. Parida reached the main venue of the Republic Day function, where he unfurled the National Flag and inspected the Guard of Honour. This was followed by a March Past by various contingents of Police and NCC Cadets participating in the Republic Day Parade. It was for the first time that a woman IPS officer-Smt. Niharika Bhatt, ASP, Chandigarh Police, lead the Chandigarh Police contingent.

Sh. Manoj Parida then addressed the audience with Republic Day wishes and highlighting the latest initiatives and achievements of Chandigarh Administration namely Approval for 5 major projects worth 985 crores by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited Company (24 hour water supply, smart water meters in Manimajra, augmentation of new sewerage treatment plants and provision of new STP near Lake, scientific waste disposal, animal carcasses disposal, public bike sharing facility etc), Merger of 13 villages in Municipal Corporation, Approval for allotment of land for Housing Project of Government employees, 25 MWp Grid tied Rooftop Solar Plants installed, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR-A Night Vigil”, Project Phoenix, Atal Tinkering Labs, Chandigarh Skill Development Mission, One stop centre-Sakhi and Senior Citizen Safety App in his speech.

After this, the Chief Guest gave commendation certificates to 23 awardees who have rendered their outstanding services in the field of Public Service, Art and Culture, Sports and Social Services. Along with this, 18 Police personnel were also conferred Administrator's Police Medal for their distinguished and meritorious services. The Adviser to the Administrator also met the Freedom Fighters who were present at the Parade Ground to witness the Republic Day 2019 celebrations.  

This was followed by a vibrant parade comprising tableaux from different departments emphasizing on social messages and development. Cultural programme was also presented by school children showcasing India's rich cultural heritage. The students of Govt. Model Sr. Secondary School, sector-8 presented a Yoga Show, Dev Samaj School, sector-21 students performed a Marathi Dance, Post Graduate College, sector-11 performed a Luddi Dance and Govt. Model Sr. Secondary School, sector-33 performed a Haryani Dance which enthralled the audience during the Republic Day celebrations.

The  Chief Guest then awarded the best contingents of the Parade. The Chandigarh Police received the overall best  award in the parade. In Military Force and Police category, the first prize was bagged by Chandigarh Police-IRB(Male), whereas Chandigarh Police GENERAL DUTY (Male) got second position and Chandigarh Police IRB Female came third. In NCC contingents, in the category of Civil Defence, Chandigarh Civil Defence received the first prize, Chandigarh Home Guards came second and Chandigarh Fire Service got the third position.

In NCC contingents, NCC Air Wing bagged the first position, NCC Army Wing(Boys) came second and NCC Naval Wing came third. In another category of Ambulance Brigade, Guide and Scouts, and Road Safety, Government Model Senior Secondary School sector 47 got first position, Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School sector 20 B got second position and Govt. Girls Model Senior Secondary School, sector 20 D got third position for scouts and guides.

 In School student’s category,  Punjab University Platoon came first whereas Sri Guru Harkishan Ser. Sec School-40 got second position and G.M.S.S.S-38 West got third position. Under the School  Band category, Govt Model Senior Secondary School,sector-10 came 1st, Moti Ram Arya Sr. Sec. Model School-27 scored 2nd place and Institute for Blind, sector-26 came third.

The celebrations in the honour of the date when the Constitution of India came into effect concluded with the National Anthem. Among others present during the function were Sh. Arun Kumar Gupta , IAS, Home Secretary, Sh. Ajoy Kumar Sinha , IAS, Finance Secretary, Sh. Sanjay Beniwal, IPS, DGP, Chandigarh Police, Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Sh. Kamal Kishore Yadav, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Chandigarh, Sh. Jitender Yadav, IAS, Special Secretary Home, and other senior officials of Chandigarh Administration and Police along with the residents of the city beautiful.
