Chandigarh, 2nd May, 2019: A two days Regional Training of Trainers workshop started
in Chandigarh today on Introduction of Rotavirus vaccine in the Universal
Immunization Programme. In the regional workshop, senior Government Health
Officials from States of Chandigarh, Punjab, Andaman & Nicobar Island,
Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Uttarakhand and representatives
from Immunization partner agencies like World Health Organization (WHO),
UNICEF, UNDP, Global Health Strategies, JSI and others are also participating
in the workshop.

Health & Family Welfare cum Mission Director – National Health Mission,
Chandigarh while addressing the workshop said that water is the main cause of
diarrhea and there should be inter departmental coordination for supply of
safe, clean and Potable Water. He mentioned that the role of Public Health
Department is also very crucial, therefore liasoning and sharing of information
is very essential. This issue is going to be actively dealt with during the
celebration of Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF). Dr. Jaspal Kaur,
Director Health Services, Punjab, Dr. Avneet Kaur, Director Family Welfare,
Punjab, Dr. Nutan Mundeja, Director, Directorate of Family Welfare, GNCT of
Delhi also chaired the workshop and motivated the participants with their
words. Rotavirus vaccine is being expanded throughout the country in a phased
manner. Rotavirus is a highly contagious virus and makes thousands of babies ad
young children sick every year. Vaccination is the only specific intervention
strategy for protection from Rotavirus infection. The Rotavirus vaccine
protects 9 out of 10 children from getting severe illness caused by rotavirus.
The clinical features of Rotavirus diarrhea may vary from transient loose stools
to severe diarrhea with vomiting. If not treated adequately, it may cause in
dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, shock and death.
The Rotavirus vaccine should be a part of a comprehensive strategy to control diarrhoeal diseases along with hand washing, improved water and sanitation, treatment packages including ORS and Zinc, early and exclusive breastfeeding. The vaccine has been included in National Immunization Programme of 96 countries.
