Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Week concluded at GMCH-16


Chandigarh, 21st October 2019: The ' Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Week ' concluded today with an quiz competition at SIHFW, Govt Multi Speciality Hospital Sector 16 Chandigarh, today. An exhibition on Goitre and IDD was conducted wherein posters , handbills and informative literature on IDD was displayed and on the spot testing of Iodizied salt was done to check the iodine content of salt used by the people.

Director Health Services, Dr G. Dewan , Chandigarh advocated that going by the efforts of the department, Chandigarh has  achieved non - endemic status i.e pevelance rate of IDD has fallen below 3.4%. Our goal is that by 2024 it has to be brought down to less than 2%.

Iodine Deficiency at present by ' Goitre 'has prevalence rate of 3.4% in Chandigarh.At National level more than 200 million people are at risk of IDD while the number of persons from goitre is above 70 million. Approximately 2.2 million children are born cretins ( child born with physical& mental retardation) and 6.6 million have some kind of neurological deficit. Out of 414 district surveyed so far in India, 318 are IDD endemic.

To create awareness regarding Iodine Deficiency disorders , programme cell , Health Department of Chandigarh launched a week-long awareness campaign in the city. Students of 5 Govt. Schools were given awareness on this problem. Students were informed about correct use of iodizied salt and about various disorders of Iodine Deficiency.

In the same week , awareness through Rally by School Children GHS Behalana   Radio talks, messages on T.V were done by Iodine definiciency disorders control cell. 2 posters were given to each school for displaying atvantage points . Handbills , books and on the spot iodine testing kits too were provided to each school for awareness. Badgers on IDD were distributed among children of various schools.
         
Dr Abha Sarwal , State TB Officer took interactive session with staff and students & apprised them about Tuberculosis awareness and steps taken by Govt in patients cares like DOTS .
