Chandigarh.17th November, 2019. The 11th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela at Kalagram
received a tremendous response from tricity, today. As the Mela entered Day-3,
shopoholics had an indulging time buying crafts and textiles.This year the
North Zone Cultural Center has set-up 200 stalls given to the enthusiasm of
tricity lovers. Apart from ethnic dresses, jewellery and juttis, the dried
flowers from Nagaland, Brassware and carpets from Uttar Pradesh,
terracotta items from Rajasthan and wooden artefacts from Karnataka are
stealing the visitor's attention. The stalls selling Pashmina and wollen shawls
from Kashmir are quite popular.
It
was a houseful at Kalagram performance venue as Playback singer and music
composer Padma Shri Kailash Kher performed today.Kher with his unique style of music and rendition amused the
audience with the hits like Teri Deewani, Saiyyan, Piya re Piya re and many
more.He created a magical ambience keeping the listeners glued to their seats
till the end and pulled the crowd in huge numbers. Kher's latest numbers Jai
jaikara and Kaun hai wo from Bahubali remained in the charts for long and he
never failed to create the magic again.
The team of musicians included Paresh Kamath on lead guitars, Naresh
Kamath on bass guitar, Kurt Peters on drums, Neil Hose Gomes on acoustic
guitars, Samir Chiplunkar on keyboard, Tapas Roy on Saaz and Mandolin, Hitesh
Prasad on tabla and Jovian Soans as sound engineer.
Vinod
P Kavle, Secretary Cultural Affairs, Director Cultural Affairs UT Saurabh Arora
and Director NZCC Saubhagya Vardhan were present on the occasion.
Today's highlight
Chatais made out of natural grass and cotton from Kolkata at
stall no 166 are the talk of the town. You can also buy curtains made out of
natural fibre and give a rich ethnic and earthy look to your living and drawing
room. Other products available are wallets, bags and large size chatais with
cotton support and carry bags. "One chatai takes one day to weave
depending on the size(3/6)", says National Awardee Alak Kumar Jana",
adding, " We have products ranging from RS 50 to 2,000. Although we have
products worth 60,000 that includes Masland a fine thin chatai for which I
received the National Award in 2008."
Food Court
The spacious venue is serving mouthwatering traditional foods
from Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Delhi and Maharashtra. Not to forget the Chinese
cuisines, tandoori chai, chana zor garam and the street foods from Mumbai.
Like every year, CITCO has set up a stall of North Indian Dishes
at a reasonable price. To amuse the young visitors, the venue is also serving
pizzas, grilled sandwiches and pasta.
Speciality
The exotic Paan served by Rangeela Paan Point from Saharanpur,
Uttar Pradesh, is hard to resist. Their unique call never fails to attract the
visitors. He along with his brother has a variety of flavors including
chocolate and mango, guava, rajnigandha, strawberry and pineapple. "We
make 72 types of Paan with 32 types of mouth fresheners", says Rihan, who
comes to the Mela every year. Khajuri, Golden Night and Paan Morabbe Wala are
his specialities among others and he serves every Paan with poetic lines that
is his USP.
Art Exhibition
Environmentalist, artist and journalist Dr Asha Arpit has put up
a photo exhibition Skill India Craft India to motivate people. The artist wants
to bring awareness so that the people may recognize the hard work and the cost
put in for making crafts and handloom products. She wants to sensitise the
buyers to refrain from bargaining.
Besides this the Lalit Kala Akademi has set up a pavilion
showcasing the works of Vinay Sharma from Jaipur. Sharma also presents a live
show 'Rhythmic past' that lays stress on procuring the past. The venue has
statues made out of paper that is about 200 years old.
Amusement venue
The amusement area has rides, swings, live folk performances
like bhangra and acts by Baaazigars and Been Jogis. People can be seen busy
taking selfies with Kachchi ghodis and Behrupiyas from Rajasthan.
The event has folk dancers from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu and from
Rajasthan to Manipur.
The event is a joint venture of Chandigarh Administration and
North Zone Cultural Center, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
