Chandigarh Emerge as Overall Winners in 65th National School Games


Chandigarh, 23rd November 2019: The closing ceremony of the 65th National School Games in Baseball and Fencing U-19 Boys and Girls was conducted at the Sports Complex, Sector 7 in Chandigarh today. The games were held from 18th to 23rd November in Chandigarh. The city played host to over 800 players and their officials from 18 different states and UT’s.

Mr. B L Sharma, IAS, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration was the Chief Guest and was received warmly by Mr Rubinderjit Singh Brar, PCS, Director School Education and other senior officials of the Education Department, Chandigarh. Mr. S  Ramakrishnan, Observer from the SGFI also graced the occasion.

The chief guest honoured the winning players with the medals and trophies. In Baseball boys category the gold was bagged by Chandigarh, silver by Madhya Pradesh and the bronze by Chattisgarh. In the girls event again the team of Chandigarh snatched the gold from Delhi, while Maharashtra won the bronze.

In the Fencing event, the overall winner among the girls events in Foil, Epee and the Sabre was the team from Kerala. It was followed closely by Chandigarh and then by Punjab. In the boys event the team Chandigarh won the overall trophy for the 4th successive year. It was followed by Maharashtra and Punjab.

The event began with an impressive march past by the state/UT teams to the tune played by the band of Chandigarh Police. The Best March Past Trophy was bagged by the team from Jammu & Kashmir for their impressive coordinated march past during the Opening Ceremony. After the ceremonial presentation of the trophies an energetic Gatka performance was given by the students of GMSSS, Sector 10, Chandigarh. The students of GMSSS, MHC, Mani Majra gave a foot tapping Bhangra.

The chief guest Mr B L Sharma congratulated the prize winners on their grand success at the national level. He motivated them to continue their winning streak further. He also complemented the Education Department, Chandigarh for successfully conducting the National School Games. The chief guest also emphasized the importance of martial arts which enhance physical fitness and discipline. Mrs. Anujit Kaur, DEO, Chandigarh Administration gave the vote of thanks.

The 65th National School Games Closing Ceremony came to an end with the ceremonial lowering of the SGFI flag from the mast. The closing ceremony culminated with the rendering of the National Anthem.
