Shramik Special Train Press Release


Chandigarh, 22 May 2020: Due to lockdown, some of the migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons are stranded at Chandigarh. For smooth movement of these persons, the Chandigarh Administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure comfortable and safe journey through Shramik Special Trains. Two Holding Centres have been set up at Chandigarh College of Engineering Technology (CCET) in Sector-26 where the persons are medically examined and provided packed lunch. Thereafter they are sent to Railway Station through buses where they are provided packed food and one litre water bottle for the journey, before boarding in assigned coaches. M/s Kandhari Beverage Private Limited of Chandigarh is providing Juices/Coke to each of the passenger of all the Shramik Special Trains scheduled upto 31.05.2020.

The stranded persons were allowed to register for movement either through Helpline or website of the Chandigarh Administration upto 13.05.2020. One day before the scheduled departure of the Train, telephone calls are made to registered persons asking them to reach the Holding Centre for medical screening and thereafter journey through Special Train. It has been observed that after opening of industrial and commercial units, a considerable number of Migrant Labour is not interested to move out.

• Today i.e. 22.05.2020, a Shramik Special Train with 1237 Persons departed at 03.25 PM for Motihari (East Champaran) in Bihar. Total about 3500 persons were contacted on their phone for this train and 1549 persons gave their consent but finally 1237 persons turned up at the Holding Centre. Though capacity of the Train was 1600 but due to poor response from the Migrant Labours who registered for moving out from Chandigarh, it went with lesser capacity.

• Today i.e. 22.05.2020, total 14 Migrant Labours of Sikkim were also sent through a Shramik Special Train. The Chandigarh Administration also co-ordinated journey of 239 Migrant Labours of Sikkim from other states like Punjab, Himachal and Uttarakhand by the same Shramik Special Train destined to New Jalpaigudi Station. All these 253 persons will reach Sikkim by buses from New Jalpaigudi Railway Station. 

• Yesterday i.e. 21.05.2020 in the late evening, total 138 Migrant Labours of Chhattisgarh were sent to Dehradun by Special Buses. From Dehradun their journey has been arranged through a Shramik Special Train to Chhattisgarh scheduled for today i.e. on 22.05.2020.

Shri Manoj Parida, Adviser to the Administrator, visited the Holding Centre at CCET in Sector-26 to see the arrangements for the Shramik Special Trains. He interacted with the passengers, Doctors, Railway staff and Officers/Officials of the Chandigarh Administration. He mentioned that it is the endeavour of the Administration to arrange safe & comfortable movement of the Migrant Labours, whoever wants to go to their places. He appreciated the arrangements and instructed the officers to continue with the good work till the process is completed.

Tomorrow i.e. 23.05.2020, a Shramik Special Train has been scheduled at 02.00 PM for Gaya in Bihar and Dhanbad in Jharkhand. The registered persons for Gaya, Aurangabad, Arwal, Jahanabad, Nalanda, Navada, Rohtash and Bhojpur Districts in Bihar and Dhanbad District in Jharkhand have been contacted on the given mobile number and are requested to reach the Holding Centre at Polytechnic College (CCET), Sector-26 by 08.00 AM on the day of departure of the Train. Ladies with small kids, Pregnant Ladies, Handicapped Persons and Senior Citizens will be accommodated on priority. Total 3403 persons have been contacted and out of them total 1602 have given their consent for taking the train for Bihar tomorrow. Those who have not received telephone call should not come to Holding Centre because entry will be allowed after confirmation from the list of registration. The persons from other district are advised not to enter into Chandigarh because their journey will be arranged by District Authorities of that district only.

The Chandigarh Administration is co-ordinating with different States and Railways for more Shramik Special Trains. The Administration is also finalising the schedule of movement of stranded persons to nearby states through special buses.
